Viper SmartStart Launched on Android

Viper’s mobile car control system now plays nice with Android, in addition to iPhone and BlackBerry.

SmartStart lets you pop the trunk, lock the doors, sound the alarm, and even start the car from your phone, no matter where you are. You can also get security alerts if your alarm goes off. Of course, this involves installing an elaborate $500 hook-up, and that you pay ’em $30/year after your first year – sounds like a lot for amounts to little more than a novelty.

Many car manufacturers are getting connected to smartphones these days, but not all of them are offering remote start capabilities. BMW’s ConnectedDrive is primarily interested in GPS navigation, while Ford Sync is trying to win over mobile app developers with API hooks. The Chevvy Volt is for far the only one that’s done remote car starting through their branded app with OnStar. For anyone riding any other car, SmartStart looks like it’s your only option.

Download link below, presuming you’ve already got everything else set up. More info on the app over at Viper.
