LG Ally gets custom recovery image, makes way for custom Android ROMs

The LG Ally for Verizon is a good Android phone, but it could use some work on the software side. Thankfully, that may all soon change, as the Ally now has its own custom recovery image of its own. With the custom recovery image in tow, it’s only a matter of time before we see the LG Ally being blessed with custom Android ROMs.

At the moment, there are currently no ROMs available for the device. As with all Android phones, it will take time for developers to cook up a custom ROM. We know the phone will get Android 2.2 Froyo at some point in the future, but it’s likely that a developer will cook one up before the official 2.2 update begins to roll out from Verizon. Froyo itself should give the Ally a good speed boost, but the optimizations from a custom rom may make it even faster than what even LG can come up with. The handset can get a little laggy at times, so an Android ROM optimized for performance may be just the thing it needs.

While we wait on the ROMS to come our way, this new recovery image allows you to perform a full system backup of the device. This will come in handy if you apply mods that go awry on you in some way – just flash back to your full system backup, using Nandroid. Nandroid basically takes a snapshot (if you will) of your phone, and can restore the phone to that point without any additional steps. All system settings, homescreen placement, text messages, and Android apps remain fully intact. Nandroid has been around for a while now, but we’re glad to see it become available for the Ally, as it’s one of the devices you’ll likely want to tinker around with the get the best experience.

A custom recovery image isn’t necessarily big news, but it’s promising enough to get us excited. There are many devices that are better than LG’s first US Android phone, but for a mid-range device, it’s just fine. And, once we get some Froyo on board, officially or not, the Ally should truly come into its own.

If you’re ready to the recovery on your Ally, check out this thread.
