We knew the TweetDeck application for Android would be released at some point this week in the form of a public beta, but it looks like one of the most anticipated Twitter apps for Android has been leaked ahead of schedule.
I have yet to really give the app a thorough run down, but according to Phandroid, it’s nowhere near ready for prime time. It’s been said that this is an old build, and that it would be best if this app was avoided for the time being. TweetDeck recently confirmed that this leaks is an old build, and recommend that you just wait for the official beta to drop tomorrow. While I’ll definitely hit up the official beta when released, I figured it couldn’t hurt to get myself acquainted to this build.
Upon launch of the app, you are given the option to add in your Twitter, Facebook, Buzz, and Foursquare accounts, just as you can on the newest version of TweetDeck’s desktop program. After your accounts are set up, if you’ve used the app on the iPhone, you’ll be greeted with a very similar layout: columns you can swipe through, showing mentions, and direct messages. I haven’t had any problems with the app so far, so old build or not, I think I’ll keep using it. Until the real deal comes out to play, that is.
I was really hoping to see a nicely done widget for TweetDeck, but sadly, there isn’t one. So, while I’ll keep using this as my primary Twitter application, Twidroyd is here to stay – I like the large widget it comes with. If the official TweetDeck beta comes with no widget, I’d expect one to show up eventually. Sometimes all I want to see is the last couple tweets, without having to launch the app. To be fair, not having a widget isn’t a deal breaker, but it certainly makes me need another client to satisfy my at-a-glance Twitter needs.
It may not be worth the hassle to find the app, since the official beta will be coming tomorrow, but if you feel that you can’t wait, you can find it. Google is your friend.
