PSA: Twitter users, beware the counterfeit TweetDeck app in Android Market

Are you a Twitter (or Facebook or Foursquare or Buzz) user with an Android phone, looking to get in on the official TweetDeck beta app for your smartphone? Well, word to the wise, we’ve gotten word that there was a counterfeit app in the Android Market that was masquerading as the official TweetDeck version. The app has apparently been pulled for now, but we figured it would be good to give you all a heads-up on the situation. In short, the app that was briefly in Android Market is not legit and you should definitely think twice about paying for any other fakes that may pop up in the future.

We’re not here to tell you what you should do with your money, but if it were us and we had to decide between hitting up the free official TweetDeck beta or paying for and using a likely inferior product from the Market, we’d surely be going with the official version. And, considering that the official version will likely be free once it goes live in the Android Market, we’re doubly bearish on this faker.

A quick check in the Market brings up no search results for any TweetDeck hits, so it seems that it’s been pulled. Still, you should be wary of any future counterfeits asking you for money.

The official app is still in beta for the Android platform, and it’s only available through a direct download (it’s not in the Market yet). But, even at this still-in-development stage, TweetDeck beta for Android is looking darn good and has a lot of potential. We had some issues with the app’s use of screen real estate and unified update stream, but given the beta nature of the app, we’re willing to give it a pass on those points of contention.

Be sure to check out our full hands-on preview of the TweetDeck beta app in full 1080p HD video here.
