We’re all too aware of the R2D2 limited edition version of the Motorola Droid 2 for Verizon coming on September 30th, but now we are getting a few more pictures of possibly the world’s geekiest device ever. Ever.
Other than the look of the handset, and pre-installed software, the R2-D2 Droid 2 is just the same as it’s brother, which went on sale from Verizon last Thursday. While I can definitely see the appeal to the Star Wars fans out there, I think the thing is ugly. I’m not a Star Wars fan at all, but I do appreciate R2D2. Still, the robot on a phone looks like there’s just too much going on. I’m half tempted to buy one when it comes out to just sell it on eBay for much for than $200.
If you want to be one of the lucky ones that get this limited edition device, you’d better be awake and online when the thing goes on sale. Who knows if this thing will sell out immediately, but the flood of people trying to access Verizon’s site to get one of these bad boys may burn through Motorola and Verizon’s launch inventory of the R2D2 Droid 2. I’d really like to see a scavenger hunt for this device, like we saw for the Droid X, as we’d really see a flock of people running around like mad men. Maybe they will, as the mini-site for the device suggests you follow @DroidLanding to unlock details, but there’s still no mention of the device or any scavenger hunt.
Regardless of my thoughts on the design of the R2D2 Droid 2, this phone is destined to be a hit. Verizon was smart to put a spin on their Droid 2, and I’m sure Lucas wouldn’t mind getting some more money from the carrier, either.
If the R2D2 edition isn’t enough to make you want to get one of these things, then maybe the super limited-edition Darth Stewie version only found on the black market will pique your interest.
