We know that a Halo offshoot will be coming to Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 and the idea of controlling Master Chief on your phone has many gamers salivating. The company is showing off a brief demo of the Waypoint app and it could just be a taste of what’s to come.
If you’re not a hardcore gamer, then you probably have no idea what Halo Waypoint is. It’s not really a game but a way to keep track of all your Halo community and stats. Microsoft said the app only took three months to get on Silverlight and it will be available for free in the Windows Marketplace for Mobile.
As Windows Phone 7 looms, Microsoft appears to be placing a large emphasis on gaming and that’s a good thing in my mind. Microsoft’s Xbox is arguably the best console gaming experience – PlayStation 3 may have better graphics and the Wii may have more casual appeal but I think the Xbox puts together the best combination of games, graphics and services.
We know that Microsoft will have between 50 to 60 games when Windows Phone 7 launches and some of these will allow you to start on a PC or Xbox and then play that same game on your phone. The mobile gaming space is becoming increasingly important and the competition is heating up.
The Apple iPhone has captured a lot of the attention in this space due to the success of its App Store. Big-name developers like Konami and Electronics Arts have also jumped on board the iPhone train.
Sony Ericsson is also rumored to be creating the often-rumored PlayStation Phone and it will supposedly be based on Android 3.0. We’ve heard that this will have some strong graphics and the ability to download new, Sony-specific games that could be a key competitor to Windows Phone 7 games.
Alright, it’s time to stop talking, so check out the video below. You’ll need Silverlight to watch it, though.
