Sanyo’s first ever Android phone, the Zio, will be coming to Cricket on August 21st. This is also the carrier’s first Android handset and they’ve taken the liberty of allowing you to pre-order the Zio starting today.
We got some hands-on time with the Zio at CTIA earlier this year, and for what it is, it’s a great Android phone. It’s not the prettiest, most powerful, or cheapest, but we’re expecting Cricket customers to be jumping for joy about this handset.
In store, the handset will cost you $250 out the door, but if you decide to buy the thing online, they’ll take $20 off. So you can get this thing for $220, and put that extra money towards your first month’s bill. The required plan for the device will run $55 dollars and month, which is pretty darn cheap, but when you look at the service you’re getting, it may not seem so great. That’s not to say Cricket is a bad carrier and it’s a bad deal, but that’s just the price range regional carriers’ will offer now days. The $55 dollar plan will give you everything from unlimited talk, sms, mms, web, the works. And it’s a whole $5 cheaper than the Blackberry data plan.
If you need a refresher on what the device will bring you, expect the following from the Sanyo Zio:
- 3.5 inch display (400 x 800)
- 3.2 megapixel camera w/ video capture up to 30 fps
- 512 MB of on-board memory
- 600 MHz Qualcomm MSM7227 CPU
- 3.5mm headphone jack
- WiFi
- Bluetooth
- 1130 mAh lithium-ion battery
We’ve seen better specs before, but we’re definitely not complaining, either. The mid-range Android handset should suit the needs of the Cricket power user, and will likely be the best phone offered by the carrier.
So, go ahead and pre-order the Zio if you need some Android in your life. The device will be shipped overnight to you on August 21, and you’ll have a brand new Zio at your doorstep the next day. If you’re on Cricket and you’re itching for some Android, it looks like the Zio will be the best you’ll get for a while now.
