OpenFeint, the popular social networking service for mobile games, said it will allow both Android and iPhone users to compete against one another in online multiplayer games.
Here are the words of Aurora Feint executive chairman Peter Relan: “One glaring problem with today’s mobile gaming community is how fractured it is across platforms. OpenFeint is bridging the gap between gamers… we’re going to roll out services that will help friends that use different device platforms play against each other.”
To be fair, this isn’t the first time we’re hearing about cross-platform social network integration. Skies of Glory was the first (or at least the most notable) example of such an integration. With OpenFeint entering the market, we’ll definitely see more games coming with multi-platform leaderboards and other social network elements.
In addition to the cross-platform capabilities, the new OpenFeint release (version 2.6) will also allow users to send text messages or email game invites to anyone in their address book (not just OpenFeints members) to join the party. Initially, this capability will be released for the iPhone, and will be incorporated for Android in the near future, too…
