The DROID 2 launched in early August, achieved root at the end of August, and obtained its first custom ROM today. The ROM, dubbed Epic Unleashed, is an offshoot of the Epic ROM which made its debut on the original DROID. Epic Unleashed builds upon the stock Android 2.2 with MOTOBLUR that ships on the DROID 2. Epic Unleashed removes the Verizon bloatware, adds several scripts, and is fully deodexed. It also includes the DROID 1 boot animation for nostalgia.
Installation is relatively straightforward, but a few steps need extra caution. First, you must have a rooted device and Koush’s DROID 2 Recovery Bootstrap application installed. Details on the bootstrap application are available here and the APK file is available for download here. The bootstrap application allows you to boot into Clockwork recovery so you can make Nandroid backups, install ROMS, etc. You should also download the Epic ROM here and copy it to the root directory on your sdcard/external memory.
Once you have these preparations completed, you will need to boot into recovery using the “reboot recovery” option within this bootstrap application. Once you are in recovery, be sure to make a full Nandroid backup so you have a recovery point if all goes to hell in a handbasket. While still in recovery, select “Install zip from sdcard” and toggle signature verification to disable this option.
You are now ready to install the ROM zip file from the sdcard by selecting “Install zip from sdcard” again and choosing the Epic Unleashed zip file. Allow the install to run to completion and then reboot your phone. If all goes as planned, you will be rocking and rolling with the first custom ROM for the D2. If you need help, point your browser to the update thread for all the latest information on this ROM and this thread at xda-developers for detailed installation instructions. Enjoy!
