The DROID X received the highly anticipated Android 2.2 update last week. As with all major updates, some features improve and some, unfortunately, take a turn for the worse. Its the same for the DROID X- while some users are happy with froyo, others are reporting that the Android 2.2 update has produced a troubling SMS bug.
According to posts on Motorola’s support forums, the error involves the chronological ordering of SMS messages. Normally, incoming messages elicit a notification and bump the message and its thread to the top of the messaging list. With the Android 2.2 update, the notification works properly but the ordering of the messages is upside down.
Incoming messages no longer bump the thread up to the top of the list; they merely appear within the original thread which may be 5, 10, or even 20 messages down. Chronological sorting does occur but the sorting is based upon the time stamp for sent messages only, not received messages. While not a critical flaw, it is rather inconvenient especially if you do a lot of texting and have to hunt for each incoming message as it arrives.
Motorola has confirmed that this error exists and is currently working on a fix which will come in the form of a software update. For those that do not want to wait, some users are reporting that the SMS Time Fix app will fix this error. The app is free in the Android market and is worth a shot if you are experiencing this error.
