On the BlackBerry scene, we’ve seen nothing short of a whackload of BlackBerry PlayBook news in the last 24 hours… and with good reason. The PlayBook is RIM’s first entry into the tablet scene, and while the jury is still out on it, I honestly can’t wait to get my hands on one.
Believe it or not, there has been other news coming out of DevCon 2010, going on right now in San Francisco. BlackBerry Widgets have been renamed WebWorks and have gone open source. A new in-app ad platform and micro-transactions setup has launched… and, RIM is allowing developers to plug directly into BlackBerry Messenger.
Lots of good stuff for sure… and while the news I’m about to tell you about is nowhere near as important, it’s still something many BlackBerry users will want to know about… I think.
I just received word that one of the more popular weather apps for BlackBerry, namely WeatherBug (both the paid and free version), have been updated. The announcement came direct from BlackBerry DevCon 2010, and I’ve been told the update includes new interactive interfaces and new customization options.
Key feature sin the update include:
- Always-on display of current temperature and weather conditions with automatic updates as weather changes or an alert is issued
- Contextualized location-based weather accessible by touching map locations
- Tight integration with BlackBerry Contacts, Maps and Calendars by updating weather for addresses, locations and scheduling
- Sharing of weather content, alerts and images by email from within the applications
- Proactive and notification-driven alerting when severe weather threatens including lightning alerts exclusively from the WeatherBug Total Lightning Network
- Efficient use of push technology for conserving device resources
WeatherBug Elite (the paid version) is available right now. WeatherBug (free) will be available in early October with all of these new features jammed-in. For more information hit up the App World links below, or visit WeatherBug.com.
