Apple iPhone to finally be sold unlocked in Finland; coming to Elisa tomorrow

Finland, Finland, Finland, country where I want to be! Wait a minute … I’ve been here for 3 years now! I’ve also only used Nokia devices until this February when I switched to Android after buying a Nexus One. The only reason I own an Android device and not an iPhone, and I’m serious when I say this, is that they’re sold unlocked so I can use any operator I want. Tomorrow the Apple iPhone, which has been peddled by Sonera since it first came to the land of a thousand lakes, will be available from Elisa both under contract and full retail price for those who have commitment issues, totally unlocked. It’s going to cost 589 EUR ($800) for the 16 GB model and 689 EUR ($935) for the 32 GB version, and yes that includes tax.

I emailed Elisa and asked them if they’re going to swap full size SIM cards to microSIM cards for customers who ask, and they said of course, they’ll even do it for free. I also asked about customers like me, who are using prepaid, will store representatives be trained or have the tools required to cut my SIM card down to microSIM card size? They responded absolutely. Earlier today I went to the Elisa store inside Kamppi shopping mall, one of the biggest points of commerce in the city, located right in the center, and asked if they were taking preorders. They replied no, they’ll be sold on a first come first serve basis, and that there are about 140 in the storage room at that very moment. The store clerk winked at me and said he opens up shop at 09:00, so guess who’s going to be there at 08:30 in queue?

Finally, I’m going to have an iPhone. My very first iPhone. Will I turn into a fanboi? Probably not. I switch phones too often to love one more than the other. The only device that still holds a space in my heart is the Nokia E71, which I used for close to 2 years. I miss you baby.
