During the recently ended Mobilize 2010 conference in San Francisco, Orange announced that its “Open Source Mobile Widget Platform” is now available to the mobile industry, allowing developers to make HTML-based widgets that could run on an array of mobile devices, both the basic feature phones and high-end smartphones.
The platform includes:
- A “widget reader” that is already integrated into millions of Orange mobiles throughout the world
- Server technology that enables management of a catalogue of widgets
- Tools for creating widgets, documentation and examples of code
Orange said that this is another demonstration of their “commitment to a more open world.” The France Telecom-owned company has worked with a number of partners and developers through its Orange Partner program since 2004. Moreover, they were one of the first operators to publish its APIs, making them available to developers from 2008 onwards to create value added services for customers.
