The Guinness World Record for world’s lightest touch screen phone has just been awarded to the modu T. How much does it weigh exactly? You’d think modu would put that information in their press release, but let me in on a little secret: they’ll never, ever, ship a retail device. Period. The whole concept of modu is that you have the bare essentials needed to have a mobile phone, which means a screen, a few buttons, and a cellular modem. Then you slide your modu into sleeves that give features such as a QWERTY keyboard or high resolution camera. The goal is to make modu the eventual replacement for the SIM card, and it’s probably the most laughable dream the mobile industry has ever heard. Whatever, these guys got funding, so they need to at least look like they’re doing some “advanced research and development”.
Pessimism aside, what does the modu T actually do? It’s running on Qualcomm’s Brew operating system, as seen on the HTC Wildfire, has a 2.2 inch screen, resolution unknown, FM radio, and GPS. That’s right, it doesn’t even have a camera. They’ll be a version with WiFi coming “in the near future” called the modu W. It’s supposed to run Google’s Android operating system. Can you see the hand gesture I’m making under my desk? Yes, it’s me wanking.
If you’re into small touch screen phones then your choices are rather limited. There’s the Sony Ericsson X10 Mini and Mini Pro, both devices have a 2.55 inch screen, but they sadly run only Android 1.6; there are claims however that they’ll eventually get version 2.1. Check out our review here. Then there’s Nokia’s recently announced C6-01, that has a 3.2 inch screen and is packed to the gills with features. If you’re on a budget there’s the Nokia 5250 which features a 2.8 inch touch screen and runs full blown Symbian.
