As expected, BlackBerry Internet Service 3.2 has been rolled out in North America, complete with Google Calendar Sync. Now you can finally ditch that Google Sync app and let the native BIS architecture keep your web-based and on-device contacts and appointments on the same page. The last BIS update allowed Contact sync with Yahoo! and Windows Live webmail services, so it stands to reason that they’ll get calendar sync at some point too. There’s still no syncing with Google Apps (the enterprise version of the Google web suite), which feels a little backwards, but again, maybe that’s something to look forward to in a future release.
BlackBerry Internet Service is the consumer-grade service carriers offer, to folks who aren’t in a position to set up their own servers, while the BlackBerry Enterprise Server is built for corporations, and plays nice with existing Exchange servers to deliver secure push e-mail.
If you’d like to enable calendar sync, just go to your on-device e-mail setup, and there should be a checkbox under Synchronization Options. A full run-down of the more mundane features in BlackBerry Internet Service 3.2 can be found in this knowledge base PDF.
