The ever-innovative Tata DoCoMo is gearing toward launching its 3G network on November 5th, making it the first private operator to launch a WCDMA-based network in India. The so called Diwali Day will compete with two state-owned rivals, MTNL and BSNL, which were given an “early 3G start” by the government.
Tata DoCoMo’s Executive President of Mobility Business Division, Deepak Gulati, said the plan is to offer 3G services in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Kerala, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh (West), Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh circles. However, in an interview to the Economic Times, he declined to comment on the tariffs the company is planning to offer.
He pointed out how Tata’s partnership with Japanese DoCoMo is helping the company in the 3G network rollout: “Japan’s NTT DoCoMo has provided technical inputs to make our 3G network world-class. Progressively, NTT will bring various 3G products and services that it offers in Japan – such as i-mode, location based services and mobile payment – and give our customers a flavor of tomorrow.”
Japan’s DoCoMo took a 26% stake in Tata Teleservices (TTSL) for $2.7 billion in December 2008. The new operator, Tata DoCoMo, was launched in July 2009.
