Apple iPhone, iPod touch get the VLC playerThe Apple iPhone and iPod touch are great multimedia players on the go if you live in the iTunes ecosystem but many of us have a ton of videos which have to be converted to play of Apple’s mobile devices. The new VLC Media Player for the iPhone and iPod touch now enables you to play a variety of video files on the go.

The VLC Media Player is already on the Apple iPad and the new app will bring much of that video-playing goodness to your iPhone or iPod touch. It’s not quite as simple as just dragging and dropping movies and television shows through iTunes but it’s relatively easy to do.

First, you have to download the free app on to your device (download here) and then you connect your iPhone or iPod touch to your computer. This should launch iTunes and then you select your device.

In the “Apps” tab, you have to click on the VLC icon under the “File Sharing” portion. You can then drag and drop nearly any video file you want onto “VLC Documents” and you’re off to the races.

Despite the few hoops you have to jump through, the media player is a great way to get multiple videos on your Apple device. Let us know what you think of the app in the comments below.

It does not seam to support VGA out… bummer! But fortunately there is CineXplayer!

That kinda defeats the purpose dosent it? You have to use a computer… so you might as well be using a converter.

I can see using this as a way to view video files I’ve saved to Dropbox without having to convert with iFunia video converter and sync through iTunes. Certainly a time saver. Are there other advantages I’m missing? Other than flash vids, I’m not really experiencing any situations where I can’t view videos on my iPhone 3GS.

I will believe it can play MKV, avi xvid and divX properly when I see it . Dont count on this playing anything other than the same old x264…just like on the ipad WITHOUT crash-on-launch. Files Android will play easily and often natively. And if you have to use crapware like itunes to get it on your device it’s still a pain in the ass

I think apple should change their slogan from this changes everything…again to this changes nothing…again

Just use Air Video Server. It allows you to play any video from your computer, wirelessly, converting on the fly if necessary.

Does not seem to work with shows recorded with windows media center. Also how do you you remove a file once added tthere are only two buttons one to add and one to save.
