Remember MySpace? The hottest thing in social networking five years ago has just introduced a major redesign and this will soon be coming to your mobile phones. In a world where Facebook seems to be ubiquitous, is this move too little, too late?
The new MySpace redesign actually looks pretty good, as it emphasizes multimedia content with multiple views including List, Grid and Play (for videos). There are new content hubs, personalized streams and more ways to see what’s hot on the second-class social networking space.
According to MySpace, the redesign will soon be hitting your phone:
To complement the online experience, Myspace will soon release a mobile version of the beta site, accessible on any mobile browser. A new Myspace app for iPhone and Android devices will follow later this year.
It may be easy to laugh at the redesign but it wasn’t too long ago that this was the most popular social network on Android in terms of downloads. I’d imagine part of the reason for this was that the Facebook apps for Android are not up to part with the iPhone counterpart.
Mobile is going to be an important part of the comeback attempt, so look for more apps for a variety of devices like the Apple iPad. I like the competition but don’t think the Fox-owned company has a good shot at recapturing the social networking crown.
Facebook is dominant in the social networking space and that also extends to the mobile side. The company has more than 150 million active mobile users and that momentum won’t cease anytime soon.
Additionally, Facebook sees mobile as the future and it is trying to turn itself into a mobile platform. We may or may not see an Android-based Facebook phone but Facebook Connect and Places are already seeping into a wide variety of mobile apps.
Sorry MySpace, maybe this is your punishment for unleashing Tila Tequila on the world.
