BlackBerry OS 6 Leaks for the Bold 9700

Today OS 6 for the second-generation BlackBerry Bold, the 9700, was leaked, offering a host of user interface improvements, universal search from the home screen, and a new WebKit browser.

The BlackBerry Bold 9700 is solid mid-rand smartphone, and packs most of the same specs you’ll see in newer BlackBerrys, like an HVGA display, Wi-Fi, GPS, 3G, 3.2 megapixel camera, and 256 MB of RAM. The RAM thing is worth extra attention, since this leak is the first that has been made available for anything less 256 MB. That being said, we’re still not entirely sure what the specific hardware requirements are for OS 6, if it’s not RAM.

RIM has been showing off the 9700 running their latest operating system, so right now the software is just going through carrier testing, which we can safely presume is the source of this leak. The Bold 9700  isn’t alone in its upgradability; we’ve already seen the OS 6 leak for the Curve 3G 9330 and Bold 9650 make the rounds last month. The Pearl 9100 and Curve 3G 9300 are also due for an upgrade, on top of devices shipping with the new operating system, like the Torch 9800, Bold 9780, and Style 9670. Speaking of the 9780, this leak should placate 9700 owners who feel compelled to upgrade for the nicer camera and added RAM, since many of the functional additions are in the OS.

Anyway, download links to OS 6.0.0.344 for the BlackBerry Bold 9700 are below. Just remember, these aren’t carrier or manufacturer-supported, so you’re entirely on your own if something goes wrong. Have fun!

i did and it’s great. only think you need to do is if you’re running a Tmobile 9700 you need to delete the Tmobile themes before running loader. you can find those in the java folder.

  • Janedoe

works well on AT&T. I read that people with T-Mobile and Un-Locked phones are having issues.

Hello, I have managed to install on my bb 9700 the leaked os 6.0.0.334 without any problems! I updated the blackberry desktop managed to 6 and remover the installed firmware 5.0 from the pc, then I installed os 6.0.0.344 onto my pc, deleted the vendor file and plugged the bb to the pc and the installation went ahead without any problems!!! I have now been playing with my bb9700 for 48 hours straight without having found any bugs or glitches. I would recommend the update to everyone but as it’s a leaked version is still unofficial and all updates are done at your own risk!

EDIT: T-Mobile users will need to delete the T-Mobile theme before or after installing or they will have a black/white screen with tiny icons. Remove the .cod before install or remove after with BBSAK.

true but i have noticed it is using tabbed browsing

  • Tghandour

Yah I did for version 6.358, it installed like a breeze and working fine. Excellent interface on the BB9700 with splendid Multimedia section, Universal Search and awesome interactive home screen (Now you can control not only the profile but also the Network options, Date and time options and Search) from the upper Home screen active section.

I get an error message when it starts though, but without any further problems (Anyway it is still Beta). Graphics and text scrolling performance is far better. It took more memory than BB OS5 on the 256MB memory and had to delete some unused apps. Excellent Call management and Internet browser although it is affected by the BB9700 application memory so you cannot open as much as 2 or max 3 Internet windows at the same time.

Little bit slower when coming out of Unlock mode (Maybe due to enhanced Power saving features in OS6). Nice Left and Right interactive screens for Apps at Home screen :-)

Overall it is really worth installing BB OS6 as it is a complete makeover of the old OS5.

  • el.nino

you needed to backup ur servicebook before installing and restore it once your are done installing os6

  • el.nino

is there a change in batt time ?

  • el.nino

prolly your phone is not factory unlocked, so you will havta remove vendor.xml file through the application loader and then go with the upgrade

  • guest123

i have been using the new OS for 2 months appx and it does have bugs. ive used quickpull on all my bbs but it was a must with this OS. Sometimes out of the blue itll show “app error” and i have to reset the phone cause it wont do anything! Windows MSN is the app that i find has the hardest time, sometimes i wont show “online” to my contacts or the contact list wont refresh even with the Refresh Contact List option. Another this ive noticed is that when i pair with bluetooth device itll show “unable to pair with blah blah” but it will pair even if i get that error message and it will share the file! I used to have the bb 8900 and i loved the message notifiers, unfortunately this OS doesn’t have the classics like Cricket or bb_pro (i had to download them online)

on the other hand, the batt lasts 14 hrs (+ or -), the multimedia folder is great! the universal search does make the difference, its so easy to use (sometimes itll get stuck or it wont find contacts) and it does make your life easier.

i think RIM still has a bit to work on, but its really cool! thumbs up!

Works like a charm. I’ve been running 6.344 on my bold 970 for almost 2 months. I’ve upgraded most of my friends as well, and nobody’s had a problem. Although it might not be released by your carrier for this device, the carrier is certainly supporting version 6 because of all the torches out there. Have no fear!

  • Checha_mmz134

does that version has the social feeds feature? cuz i installed the version 6.0.0.344 on my bold 9700 and it doesn’t have it :S HELP
