Sales of Windows Phone handsets in the UK are brisk but shortages continue to plague the platform. Both HTC and Samsung are facing supply constraints that are slowing the manufacturing of handsets. Samsung is reportedly faced with a shortage of AMOLED displays, a scenario that has effected the sales of select Android devices including the DROID Incredible and the EVO 4G. HTC is reportedly dealing with a software issue that is slowing the release of its Windows Phone handsets.
Orange UK carries both the HTC 7 Mozart and the Samsung OMNIA 7 and is being hit hard by these reported shortages. To satiate prospective Windows Phone customers, the wireless carrier is offering £20 vouchers to HMV (a British entertainment retail chain). Inventory is being replenished at a slowed rate and turnaround is quick. Both HTC and Samsung handsets are reportedly selling out as soon as they hit the shelves.
While the shortages are potentially troubling, analysts believe this scenario is favorable for the fledgling mobile platform. Pent-up demand for Windows Phone handsets suggests the launch of the platform is proceeding better than expected. Analyst Charles King of Pund-IT writes,
“Demand for Phone 7 phones outstripping supply may suggest that the market is cozying up to these products far more readily than reviewers or analysts assumed.”
It is unknown if these reported shortages in Europe will affect the U.S. launch which is slated for November 8th. Let’s hope this is minor blip on the Windows Phone radar and the US launch will proceed smoothly. Fingers crossed.
