The Desire HD has been spotted as an option when registering at HTC’s new Sense portal for a Canadian device, and according to some unsubstantiated rumours, the lucky carrier will be Telus and not Rogers. This news comes shortly after Bell launched another top-notch HTC Android handset, the Desire Z, which has a smaller screen, but includes a physical keyboard.
The HTC Desire HD is quite the beast, packing an 8 megapixel camera with flash, 4.3″ WVGA touchscreen, 1 GHz processor, 768 MB of RAM, 1.5 GB of on-board storage, and runs Android 2.2 along with the usual Sense customizations. One of the new ones is called Locations, which stores maps locally, so you can keep getting GPS navigation even if you’re outside of coverage. That’s a solid addition – one I wish Google would include in Maps for other platforms. Android 2.2 also includes mobile hotspot support, and plays Flash 10.1 in the native WebKit browser.
The Desire HD would fairly match Bell’s Desire Z as far as competing for the holiday crowd goes, but I’m still waiting to see what Rogers brings to the table. They launched the Galaxy S Captivate a few weeks ago, but I think it will have a hard time looking facing off against the Desire HD (unless of course Rogers beats it on price). It’ll be an interesting holiday season in Canada, in any case. We’ll let you know as soon as we hear if the Desire HD is official on Telus, but in the meantime, check out our hands-on impressions.
