When I think of Hasbro, I think of Transformers and G.I. Joe, but it looks like it can make a splash in a new way with the iPhone and iPod touch. As if those retina displays don’t pop enough, Hasbro is looking to bring some 3D action onto the iPhone and iPod touch. Remember those ViewMaster toys with the reels that let you view stuff in 3D? That’s what this puppy reminds me of, and if there is enough content for it the little novelty just might take off.
The device itself is called My3D and will cost $30 when it goes on sale next spring. You’ll be able to find My 3D content in the iTunes App Store, which includes games and other types of media that will take advantage of the 3D features. Whether it’s any good is up for debate. Without having seen it, I’m hoping it’s actually pretty cool and not some cheap gimmick.
According to Yahoo!:
Hasbro is confident it will and says it has teamed up with Dreamworks Animation, whose movie “Megamind” hit theaters last weekend, to develop material.
Separately, Hasbro’s My3D will use content from a 3-D television network from Discovery, Sony and Imax scheduled to make its debut next year. Viewers will be able to see trailers and exclusive behind-the-scenes snippets from films for up to 20 minutes. Hasbro says the device will be a key way to market its own brands in a 3-D experience, though details haven’t been set.
With 3D movies, TV and games seemingly inescapable, is the 3D experience on our smartphones the next big thing?
