AT&T and T-Mobile are currently evaluating picking up the Acer Liquid Metal Android handset, according to representatives from Acer.
The company said the Acer Liquid Metal is currently being evaluated by these carriers and it could provide a solid Android experience if it is finally picked up. Wherever it lands, the Acer Liquid Metal won’t be considered a super high-end device because the specs just don’t support that.
The Acer Liquid Metal has an 800 MHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 3.6-inch WVGA touchscreen, WiFi, 5-megapixel camera, GPS, 3G and the other features you’d expect from a smartphone like this. The handset is aptly named as it features a solid aluminum casing that does look pretty cool.
Unfortunately, the Acer Liquid Metal launched with Android 1.6, which is woefully behind. Even handsets that launch with Android Froyo will soon be outdated as Gingerbread makes its way through the pipeline.
The Acer Liquid Metal could be updated before it is picked up by AT&T or T-Mobile but it may take some extra time because it has a customized user interface called the Breeze UI. This includes things like the Social Jogger app, which aggregates your Facebook, Twitter and other social networks into a single program.
The Acer Liquid Metal may be less interesting than some of the other Android devices the company has in the works. The company is preparing a line of Android tablets that could provide nice experiences, although these don’t look like the powerhouse tablets we’re expecting from LG or Motorola.
For AT&T, this would be a solid device to add to its lineup of Android phones, which includes good-not-great devices like the HTC Aria and the Captivate. T-Mobile has a really good lineup with its myTouch 3G Slide, myTouch 4G, the G2 and its version of the Galaxy S, the Vibrant.
