Back in November, we heard Rogers would be offering a new kind of data plan that you could share between multiple devices, specifically with tablets in mind. Rogers had implemented something like that when the iPad launch, but with stuff like the Samsung Galaxy Tab out and the BlackBerry PlayBook on the way, they’re expanding the options available.
Here’s how it works as best as I can figure it out (the whole thing seems kind of complicated). Either you sign up for a new voice and data plan that is fully shareable with a secondary device, or make a data add-on shareable. Voice plans go for $55, $65, and $70, while shareable data add-ons (which are independent from whatever voice plan you chose) are $30 for 1 GB, $45 for 2 GB, and $60 for 5 GB. If you already have a plan, you can tack on $15/month to share 1 – 5 GB of data, or $20/month and sign a fresh three-year term for a subsidy on your new secondary internet device.
The voice sharing plans are actually pretty good compared to what Rogers is already offering. Basically, for an extra five bucks every month, you get twice as much data which you can split with another device. The sharing data add-ons don’t actually cost any more than usual, you just get fewer perks like unlimited social networking.
At first, I thought Rogers would for sure gouge me on enabling sharing my existing data plan with the BlackBerry PlayBook I’m ineveitably going to pick up, but I think the worst-case scenario is that they’ll make me re-up my contract for another three years, and even then, at least I’ll get a nice subsidy on the device.
