XEquals recently launched an accessory and iPhone app called blueSLR, which plugs into your SLR camera, pairs with your iPhone via Bluetooth, and is controlled through an on-device app. Sounds like an easier way to take good photos on the go than trying to mount a lens on your phone. Using the blueSLR app, you can remotely shoot (handy for those family shots you don’t want to be left out of), geotag pictures using the iPhone’s integrated GPS, or even share pictures on MobileMe, Places, Flickr, and Picasa.
As nice as the camera is on the iPhone 4, it’ll take a lot more to beat a proper digital SLR shooter. One of the main selling points of the camera on a phone is its shareability, but with an accessory like this, photography enthusiasts won’t be missing out on all of the conveniences. I’m a little worried about either how much data usage you’d gobble up sending the full pictures online, or how badly compressed they would be in order to stay a reasonable size, but those are some of the sacrifices you’ll probably be willing to make for this kind of convenience.
Currently, the Nikon D3100, D5000, D90, D7000, D2Xs, D3, D3s, D200, D300, D300S, and D700 SLRs are all compatible with blueSLR. Canons are on the way, as are apps for BlackBerry and Android. We’ll definitely be keeping an ear out for when the mobile offers are expanded. Head on over to blueSLR to nab one of the Bluetooth accessory for $149.
