Motorola has been churning out smartphones — specifically, Android smartphones — like no other, this much we know. From the Flipout to the Droid X, Moto’s smartphone portfolio covers a vast demographic that rivals other Android leaders. But, where’s Motorola’s gaming focused handset? Well, the newest rumor to hit the streets is that Motorola is in fact working on a
Stadia” gaming phone to put the PSP Playstation phone in its place.
With the new APIs and focus on gaming in Android 3.0 Gingerbread, it makes sense that the recovering smartphone maker would offer up a handset to play on the heart strings of gamers around the world. Whether or not this rumored Motorola gaming handset will be enough to rival the much-anticipated PSP Playstation phone is anyone’s guess, but having a choice would be nice.
This rumor comes from another trademark filed by Motorola, and while the name doesn’t sound like anything too revealing, the description certainly may perk up a few ears.
“handheld game device in the nature of hand-held units for playing electronic games for use with external display screen or monitor.”
So, what is this thing? Does the device require an external display, or is it optional? Whatever the device turns out to be, it may not be too far off on the horizon.
As intriguing as a gaming device from Motorola may be, I seriously question how well it could hold up against the likes of the PSP phone. I mean, it’s a PSP phone. What kind of games would Motorola offer? Android games? I think we know how that will end if Motorola is trying to leverage the games in the Android Market — there’s a serious dearth of high-powered games on Android at the moment — especially if it will go head to head with a handset that can play Playstation games. Then again, the trademark doesn’t even make mention of Android at all, so there’s a chance (however small that chance might be) that Android isn’t the OS of choice here.
Above all, this is still a rumor, and we’re not sure what or when we’ll be seeing anything more about the Stadia. Still, we’re already excited for it the Stadia!
