Police use helicopter, iPhone GPS to track down thief

Remind me never to mess with the law in Australia as the police there will seriously pull every resource in hunting down a criminal. How do I know this? The police force there deployed a friggin’ helicopter – a HELICOPTER! – to track down an iPhone thief. Sure, the chopper might have already been in the area, but still. Here in the U.S., if you report a stolen cell phone you’d be lucky if a cop even acknowledges your presence as he takes down your info.

The thief stole an iPhone from a woman in a hospital, and a chopper in the air used the iPhone’s GPS to aid in tracking the smartphone down. A 16-year-old on a bicycle – I know, right? – realized that the chopper was after him and his stolen goods, so he ditched the bike and took a tram. The police had already spotted him and figured out where he was headed, so they were waiting for the perp on the ground before he could make off with the Apple smartphone.

The thief will apparently be charged with not just the theft, but possession of cannabis, too.

And I thought that missing Droid and car found within seven minutes by police was a hell of a recovery.
