Motorola Droid and Droid Incredible getting some Gingerbread love

Whether officially or unofficially, the Gingerbread version of Android – or 2.3 – is making its rounds. This morning we caught wind of the update readying for the Nexus One – the original Google phone. While the update simmers until it’s ready, which should be in the coming weeks, some clever hackers were able to cook up a version of Android 2.3 Gingerbread for the HTC Incredible.

User r2DoesInc of the XDA Developers forum has this to say:

Who ever said we need verizon? Or even htc? When theres something that needs to be done, we do it…and we do it better than anyone else. Im proud to present the first version of the Gingerbread OS ever released for the HTC Incredible.

It should go without saying that you’d assume all risks for loading your device up with a non-official version of Gingerbread, but if this isn’t your first time tinkering with Android, I’m sure you’re watering at the mouth. After all, the XDA folks have a pretty good track record of taking care of each other and putting stuff out that’s reliable.

Additionally, the original Droid – the first cool Android device really worth owning – is getting into the mix, too. As the ROMs have marinated for the Verizon device, two versions were baked – a version with Google Apps and one without. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can download them over at Droid Life.

Being a risk-taker, I’d fiddle with either device if I still owned one or the other, but I do have to warn you that I’d often run into a little bit of trouble here and there. So if you’re wanting to get the latest Android software for your smartphone, be warned! Or at least know that you’re technically adept enough to fix any issues you may bump into.
