The HTC Desire HD is getting a software update but you shouldn’t get your hopes up, as the company said it is not the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update many of us hope for.

“To clarify, the Desire Z/Desire HD update is a maintenance build based on all your feedback. Gingerbread is not a part of this update,” HTC tweeted.

That’s a shame because the HTC Desire HD is one hell of a device and Android 2.3 Gingerbread would kick it up one more notch. While the main upgrades like NFC support may not be applicable, the software will bring a significant boost to the overall performance, as well as some slick user interface improvements.

There’s no word on how long it will take for the HTC Desire HD to get the full Gingerbread port but feel free to watch this walk-through video to whet your appetite.

It may not be gingerbread but it’s like I have a new phone. Without removing many of the alps and now I have live wallpaper and the battery seems to survive. Love it. What do great Christmas present.

HTC is not saying the Desire HD will not get the update of Gingetbread. They are clarifying that this current update they are rolling out is not the Gingerbread update.

I’m sure the Desire HD will be getting the Gingerbread update.
