The Motorola CLIQ XT, successor to the first halfway decent Android device, the CLIQ, was scheduled to get Android 2.1 Eclair some time soon. However, it looks like it has been put on hold indefinitely. The Android device was released earlier this year with 1.5, and while there were 2.0 devices floating about – like the Nexus One and Motorola Droid – users who picked up the CLIQ XT probably didn’t worry too much about software versions. After all, most Android handsets get upgraded down the line, right?
Not so for the T-Mobile handset as it’s beginning to look more like it will be stuck at just Android 1.5. It’s a major bummer for those who purchased the device and were waiting to work their way up to Android 2.1, especially since it’s a long way to go until they’re eligible for handset upgrades.
However, there is a small chance that the CLIQ XT purchased through T-Mobile will get the update, but there is no telling one. The only handsets certain to be stuck at 1.5 are the ones purchased through Wal-Mart and its Family Mobile Service plan.
Sorry to bring the bad news on Christmas Eve, folks. But if you’re lucky, maybe Santa will be dropping some G2 or Nexus S handsets into your stocking this year.
