Mobilicity Launches BlackBerry Bold 9780

New Canadian carrier Mobilicity launched the BlackBerry Bold 9780 today to replace the 9700 they’ve had since launch. For $499.99 off-contract, you get a better camera (5 megapixels) more app memory (512 MB) and all of the goodies of OS 6 (like universal search, WebKit browser, and improved user interface). Most of the other specs are the same, like Wi-Fi, 3G, GPS, and a 2.4-inch HVGA display.

It’s good to see that Mobilicity is keeping their BlackBerry lineup fresh, but I would hope that they’ll slash more than $50 off the price for the regular Bold 9700, especially to rope in those who don’t mind a lower-res camera and less app memory, and can just shove another OS 6 build on there. If you’re not hell-bent on BlackBerry, but are willing to pay $500 anyone, I’d pay the extra fifty and grab the Nexus One instead.

If you’re looking for a new BlackBerry with unlimited data and voice, minus the three-year contract, you can find the Bold 9780 chilling out at Mobilicity over here. Just keep in mind that Mobilicity’s still a young network, and if you’re going outside of their handful of coverage areas, you’ll be paying for roaming, and even then, their home zones are still very much a work in progress.
