Sony Ericsson will NOT be updating its Xperia X10, X10 Mini and X10 Mini Pro smartphones beyond Android 2.1. Android Community got this information from the Swedish-Japanese handset maker and we’re so sorry to hear that. The company did promise to deliver some updates that will for instance enable multi-touch on the Xperia X10 (at some point in Q1 2011), but that’s not enough. Do we really have to repeat this – if you don’t treat your customer properly, they’ll pick competing products on their next purchase. And since there’s plenty of choice out there, I must say I don’t understand the decision.

Despite all new phones that were launched at the CES, the Xperia X10 is still an awesome device that could easily run Android 2.3 Gingerbread. To be fair, there are unofficial ROMs out there, but that’s not the point – the point should be to keep your customers happy and have their firmwares up to date all the time. HTC does that best, though they could be faster.

Hopefully, this isn’t the final decision and posts like this (and your comments below) could help the Swedes and Japanese in the company re-think their strategy…

I hope that it really isn’t SE’s final decission, since custom mods have some issues with android market, which is about half of android.
The possibility of being able to install any regular version of android should be provided by the company.I didn’t like being forced to use a customized android version for xperia, which is, in my opinion, in no way more adecuate for the phone’s characteristics.
I dont really have a problem with having more than one widget on a small screen. What i really have a problem with is having to go through all of them one by one to reach the last one.
The company is wasting time and money developing it as well as putting at risk customer’s satisfaction by expensively keeping them in the stone age.

Also… what is the point in a toch screen with no multitouch. I dont use a keyboard with only one finger…
I really dont understand why sometimes companies insist on taking steps back…

Clearly I made a mistake choosing a Sony-Ericsson phone when I wanted to move to the Android platform. SE is just not serious about Android or its customers. It was running 1.6 Donut when 2.2 Froyo was almost out on most other phones, and the 2.1 Éclair update was rolled out, just when 2.3 Gingerbread was officially launched. Why should any customer accept being sold a phone running an outdated OS with promises of upgrade and then be left feeling shortchanged when the only upgrade you get is also an obsolete version!

Wow, I shouldn’t of bothered wasting my money on an X10 mini then, I should of gone for a HTC. Well Sony Ericsson thanks for basically crapping on us. Consider your phone outdated and void, I will be getting rid of it and going for a HTC now.
