Verizon has just released a few updates for the Droid Pro and the Samsung Fascinate and, while none of these bring the much-wanted Android 2.3 Gingerbread, these updates do add some nice features as well as fix some major bugs.
I reviewed the Samsung Fascinate a few months ago and felt the hardware and screen were fantastic but the buggy software made me want to pull my hair out. I’m talking full on crashes for no reason, delays, glitches and just an overall unpleasant experience. This Samsung Fascinate update is supposed to solve many of these problems.
Along with overall performance enhancements, the Samsung Fascinate update also includes a neat feature where the music will pause if your headphones are disconnected or if Bluetooth headphones are turned off. That’s a neat little feature that won’t get much praise but it does add to the overall experience.
Like the other Galaxy S phones, the Samsung Fascinate has the issues with GPS but this update should also fix that. To get all the instructions you need for the Samsung Fascinate update, follow this link.
As for the Droid Pro, the BlackBerry-style Android device is gaining a few features that should make it a better handset to use while you’re traveling. Look for improved audio on calls, overall performance increases, the Global mode won’t reset when you connect to a charger and it can prepend 011 to country codes in order to send SMS messages. You can get the information you need for a manual update here.
So, when can we expect Android 2.3 Gingerbread on these devices? Going by the track record, I’d expect the Droid Pro to get it in a few months and you’re on your own with the Fascinate because Samsung hasn’t been very quick about getting the latest version out there.
