We didn’t catch the Huawei Ideos X5 at CES earlier this month, but that doesn’t make us any less excited about it. Possibly the highest-end devices we’ve seen coming from Huawei, the X5 and X6 run stock Android 2.2, which is (unfortunately) becoming more and more of a novelty these days. The X6 stopped by the FCC, and looking like it’s on its way to T-Mobile USA.
The FCC filing refers to the X6 as the U9000, and has a 4.1 inch display (800 x 480), Qualcomm MSM8255 Snapdragon 1 GHz processor (same second-generation Snapdragon silicon as the MyTouch 4G), 512MB RAM, 5 megapixel camera with 720p HD video capture, WiFi (b/g/n), and HSPA+ support that can get up to 14.4Mbps. That sounds pretty solid product coming from a handset maker that’s relatively unknown in the states, and the devices we have seen haven’t been terribly impressive.
T-Mobile is one of the only major US carriers that carries stock Android devices, and many hardcore Android fans will appreciate that. While the X6 isn’t shipping with Android 2.3 Gingerbread, a stock Froyo experience ensures a super fast device throughout, and theoretically can get OS updates faster than Android phones that use homescreen skins and custom themes. We like what we’re beginning to see from Huawei, and we hope they don’t stop delivering the goods with other phones down the road.
The X6 looks to be a solid, well-rounded Android device that should have no problem flying off the shelves at T-Mobile. With the exception of the MyTouch 4G itself, the Huawei X6 may be the second go-to device for the carrier. But with a possible 4G Nexus S and Vibrant 4G down the road capable of getting 21Mbps down, the 14.4Mbps down from the X6 may have reason to worry. We doubt that will sway too many people from choosing a phone, as real-life situations will likely give a user around half of what the device is capable of.
Nonetheless, the X6 looks like a cool phone from a manufacturer that we haven’t seen much of. Let’s hope we’ll begin to hear more of this device very soon.
