The Samsung Galaxy Tab has joined the ViewSonic G-Tablet and other devices with some Android 2.3 Gingerbread treatment courtesy of a CyanogenMod 7 build. The Galaxy Tab may not be as lucky as the Nook Color with its Android 3.0 Honeycomb ROM, but it’s quite a good start.
Before you go flash your brains out, be aware that many things are broken with the ROM and even the best CyanogenMod 7 nightlies for other devices are pretty much unusable at this point. There’s currently only one Gingerbread ROM I can use on my G2 that won’t evoke explicit language a day after flashing, so do remember that this build won’t be ready for day-to-day use any time soon. Nonetheless, its great to see the CyanogenMod team is hard at working getting 2.3 onto as many devices as possible. Let’s just hope they’re not spreading themselves too thin, making users wait even longer.
The XDA forum posted the status of the ROM:
Current status:
Voice calls: OK for me but reports indicate people can hear caller on the Tab.
3G data: OK
Wifi: OK
Bluetooth: Turns on, discovery works, doesn’t fully pair with my keyboard
Camera: reports say broken, as expected.
Sensors: AKM kinda works, gravity is OK now, proximity is faked at 10cm, light sensor now works reliably but auto brightness is screwed.
GPS: should work now.
Recovery and initramfs: CWM3, broken
There are a few kinks to work out before we can see this build stabilized and that could take a while. Currently the ROM does not support the CDMA versions of the Tab, so only European GSM units and T-Mobile USA and AT&T versions will work. The fact that the recovery itself looks to be broken definitely makes us not want us to touch this ROM yet, but a good chunk of devs will be able to smooth these issues out in due time.
However, if your Tab meets the requirements and you want to give it a go, hit up the link below and share your experience with us in the comments below!
