Samsung builds 12MP backside illuminated CMOS sensor for mobile devices

Samsung is trying to keep up with the high-quality image game when it comes to its feature phones and smartphones, so it developed at 12MP CMOS sensor that looks to be a killer in terms of low-light performance. The new sensors feature 1.12 micron pixels, which is slightly smaller than that of the iPhone 4’s sensor and the Nokia N8 – both of which have 1.75 micron pixels. So the Samsung shares the same pixel count with the N8, but has smaller pixels.

Like the iPhone 4 and HTC EVO 4G, the Samsung sensor is backside illuminated, which means that wiring and other image elements are moved behind the sensors so that more light can be captured by the pixels. As a result, low-light performance is improved.

Being a huge fan of photography, I do hope that this trend is picked up by other manufacturers like Motorola, or at least those who provide image sensors for some of our favorite smartphones and smartphone makers. For additional details on the new sensors developed by Samsung, see the release on the following page.
