The long nightmare may soon be over for Nexus One users, as Android Gingerbread may be coming very, very soon. When he’s not blowing up MacBooks, Greg from MobileCrunch has been hearing from Googlers that the Gingerbread update will definitely be coming out over the air within the next few days.
We’ve heard these rumors before but it’s been about two months since Android Gingerbread was released and many Nexus One owners were hoping to get it a lot sooner – after all, one of the biggest selling points of this device was that it would be a pure Google experience and would get the updates first.
Now that Google has the sexy Nexus S to play with, Nexus One owners may not be getting as much attention as they would like. The report says that the Android Gingerbread update should be coming by the end of this week or early next week.
Of course, there’s no word on what version of Android Gingerbread Nexus One users would get. The 2.3 version is on the S model but we know that 2.4 is also Gingerbread. If I were a betting man, I’d say 2.3 lands on the original Google phone, as the 2.4 version is said to fix issues with dual-core phones.
With 3.0 Honeycomb about to launch on devices like the Motorola Xoom, there may be a bit of confusion about what version belongs on what device. Not to worry, as Google CEO Eric Schmidt said that the next version will start with an “I” (Ice Cream sandwich?) and it will unify Gingerbread and Honeycomb. Only Google could make me hungry talking about software …
So friends, keep an eye on your Nexus One and we’ll let you know when we get it, too. If you want to know what you can expect, check out our walkthrough video below.
