If you’ve gone ahead and followed our instructions on how to get Android 2.3.3 on your Nexus One, you’re likely happy with the revamped keyboard and overall improved performance but some users are reporting that the update is borking their Google Voice application.
On a help forum, multiple users are reporting that manually updating the Nexus One to Android 2.3.3 has been causing issues with Google Voice. For some people, this means absolutely no access to the call-routing service, while others have been able to get over the snag by re-installing the app.
“After manually updating to Android Gingerbread (2.3.3), I cannot access Google Voice. I can’t uninstall it because it’s not visible in the list of applications on my device but I can’t install it from the market because the market says the application is already installed. It worked perfectly in Android 2.2.2 (prior to the update),” read one complaint.
To be fair, we haven’t heard that this is a widespread problem, so let’s hope this problem isn’t impacting a large amount of people. Still, I couldn’t imagine going without my Google Voice anymore, so let’s hope this issue gets resolved sooner or later.
One example of how reliant I have become on Google Voice is that the call-forwarding service helped me avoid purchasing an international SIM when I was in Barcelona covering the Mobile World Congress show. Originally, I decided to buy a voice and data SIM to stay connected but then I just popped in a data SIM I had for an international MiFi and Google Voice and its ability to send and receive text messages kept me connected.
Sorry for injecting my man crush on the service into this story but I just wanted those infected to know that I can feel their pain. Any of you out there manually update the Nexus One to Android 2.3.3 and have Google Voice not working? Let us know your dealio in the comments and what, if anything, fixed it.
