At first we all thought that the HTC Thunderbolt, Verizon’s first 4G LTE smartphone, would be launching in late February. Then we received word that it would be early to mid-March. Now it looks like we might have to wait a little longer: the iPad 2, which will launch March 11, will precede the Android smartphone’s launch on Verizon.
It makes sense: Verizon wouldn’t want the popular Apple tablet to steal the Thunderbolt’s, well, thunder. The Android device is running Android 2.2 Froyo, and has a 1GHz processor powering it – not a dual-core like we’d hoped, but still very capable as we saw at CES 2011.
The chart above, obtained from Verizon Wireless, shows a timeline that confirms the order in which these devices have been, and will be released. Hopefully the Thunderbolt isn’t too far away – plenty of folks have been aching for an LTE smartphone from Verizon, especially when the carrier’s LTE-equipped laptop modems have been showing blazing-fast download and upload speeds.
