Virgin Mobile USA launched a new version of its social networking music application, Virgin Mobile Live. The good thing is that you no longer have to be a Virgin Mobile customer to get it – every Android smartphone owner can now download the application.

Included in the app is the carrier’s music stream hosted by DJ Abbey Braden, as well as past Virgin Mobile FreeFest performance videos, and “check in” features at events and performances, such as Lady Gaga concerts — which [check-ins] can be shared via Facebook and Twitter.

Those unfamiliar should know that Virgin Mobile Live features rock, hip hop, indie, pop and dance remixes and exclusive artist interviews with signature host, Abbey Braden. The application will first launch with select film and music content from Virgin Mobile-sponsored events such as Virgin Mobile FreeFest and “Virgin Mobile Presents The Monster Ball Starring Lady Gaga.” Frequent updates are promised to allow for a more diverse selection…

Dusan, it’s interesting to see Virgin’s leap into social networking music apps, especially after Apple’s attempted go. I admit, it is an interesting field, but I believe it is too targeted to appeal to all mobile users. This is where my company, Cherple, aims high. By using a technology we are all familiar with, SMS (texting), we are able to provide mobile social networking to any mobile user in the U.S., even if they just have a basic feature phone. Now users can not only access social networking communication on more devices, but even share media content via SMS. The Cherple platform is both a great social media tool for users, as well as an appealing option for advertisers, as we can offer in-text ads, which ensure views, unlike the haphazard banners you see on popular Web-based social networking sites. Thanks for the great read!
