Even though the Motorola Xoom comes with a microSD card slot, it has yet to be activated and allow users to expand their storage on the tablet. Well, in the absence of official support from Motorola, some developers out there have created a custom kernel that enables the microSD card slot.
For rooted users only, the custom kernel, known as Tiamat, will enable the card slot. Once a Xoom is flashed with the Tiamat kernel, the card will show up as “sdcard2” in a file manager. This finally allows users to bump the Xoom’s storage up to 64GB (32GB onboard with an additional 32GB microSD card), allowing you to carry a good chunk of media with you on the go. Hopefully we’ll soon see our music stored in the cloud by way of Google Music, allowing for even more space for the Honeycomb tablet.
There’s not much else to speak of other than developers have once again accomplished something before the manufacturer. What the hold up was for Motorola is anyone’s guess. That said, we’ve recently received a tip that the official update that will enable said function is on its way, and will land in the next few weeks. So if you’re not looking to root your Xoom, a cleaner option is coming relatively soon to the masses.
The Xoom itself may be a bit undercooked at the moment, but it’s certainly the best Android tablet you can get today. Then again, there are other interesting tablets just over the horizon, varying in size and price point.
So are you ready to flash the new kernel, or will you be waiting for the official update?
