In the wake of increasing pressure from Verizon’s LTE and T-Mobile’s HSPA+ network, Sprint is taking steps to promote their 4G network. The carrier took a baby step in this direction with a revamped 4G section of its website that includes an up-to-date coverage map, detailed information on Sprint’s 4G devices and both consumer and technical information about this network technology. The website showcases its WiMAX technology and entices customers to choose Sprint over Verizon, T-mobile orAT&T.
This proactive step to increase information about its WiMAX network is part of he company’s longer term strategy to raise awareness about it cellular network. The wireless provider is the nation’s third largest provider but its position as #3 out of 4 is in jeopardy. Earlier this year, AT&T announced that it is the process of acquiring T-Mobile , the nations’ #4 wireless carrier.
This move would put the majority of he wireless revise in the US in the hands of these two carriers. Sprint and other regional carriers can operate unencumbered by this merger but their market share would be insignificant compared to the big two of AT&T and Verizon.
Sprint objects to this merger and will do what it can to prevent it from being approved by the FCC and the DOJ. While it plans its opposition strategy, the carrier is moving ahead with the expansion of its WiMAX mobile broadband service. Currently, the carrier is hinging its mobile broadband success on WiMAX, but has hinted that LTE is a possibility in the future.
