You’ve probably noticed that a growing number of mobile phones sold today come with a built-in GPS receiver. As a matter of fact, all CDMA phones were GPS-enabled for quite some time now.

However, when it comes to GSM/WCDMA handsets, according to Berg Insight – they grew at CAGR of 28.8%, increasing almost 97% in 2010 to 295 million units. Moreover, the research company forecasts that the number of GPS-equipped devices shipped will hit 940 million units in 2015, linking the capability to the growing adoption of smartphones.

When it comes to Wi-Fi, the attach rate for WLAN connectivity in handsets reached 20% in 2010, prompting Berg Insight to forecast that shipments of WLAN-enabled handsets will hit 900 million in 2015.

Berg predicts that although devices supporting NFC will start selling in volumes during the second half of this year, their shipments will increase from less than two million units in 2010 to 400 million units in 2015…
