Roughly 4 weeks ago we reported on a rumor that said LG was going to launch a device called the “Optimus Big” that would take the same NOVA LCD technology found in the anorexic 4 inch Optimus Black and bump it up to 4.3 inches for those of you who absolutely need to carry as large of a brick with you as possible at all times. Today that rumor is no longer just a rumor with LG officially announcing the Optimus Big, better known as the LU6800, and saying that it will launch on LG U+, the 3rd largest operating in South Korea, on the 28th of this month. Other than the monster 4.3 inch display, the Optimus Big has a dual core 1 GHz processor, which we’ll assume to be the same NVIDIA Tegra 2 that’s inside the Optimus 2X, and a 5 megapixel camera with autofocus. We’re sure it comes with WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth, and all that other stuff that high end smartphones come with, but we can’t get our hands on an official specification sheet just yet.
Will it come to American and European shores? There’s no reason for it not to, especially with American’s thirst for large screen devices. What it’ll cost and which operator it’ll launch on is another story all together. Are any of you interested in this monster or are you going to wait and see what Google has up their sleeve at the upcoming I/O conference due to take place in a little over 2 weeks? There’s a high probability that a new version of Android will be shown off, one that blends the best things from the smartphone version of Android and the tablet optimized Honeycomb into one delicious release. Said new release is likely to officially support dual core processors and higher resolution screens, two things that are a must for 2011 flagships scheduled to come out in the second half.
Update: In case you were wondering, “Big” ships with Android 2.2, but will likely get an upgrade in the near term to 2.3.
