We’re still waiting on RIM’s signature BBM instant messenger client on the PlayBook tablet, but it may be coming sooner than later. Thanks to a leaked file, the app is running fine through Bridge (i.e. when the tablet is linked to RIM smartphone over Bluetooth). There are reportedly a few bugs, but that’s to be expected in any pre-release software. Notifications, contact search, smileys, and portrait-orientation support are all there, in any case.
BlackBerry Messenger on the big screen will no doubt be a blessing for those who juggle multiple conversations at once, or are particularly active in groups where the chat log can fill up fast. BBM has become something of a selling point for BlackBerry devices thanks to read/delivered notifications, instant, and secure messages, and lots of file-sharing options within groups.
You can get the .COD file here, which is then installed on your BlackBerry through a utility like BlackBerry Swiss Army Knife. No word on when we’ll see this live, but with the BlackBerry World conference starting up, it wouldn’t be surprising to see RIM showing this off in a more official manner.
