The BlackBerry PlayBook has had some time to simmer in North America, and now it’s ready for Europe. RIM’s first tablet will be available at a variety of UK retailers, like Carphone Warehouse, Best Buy, Phones 4U, Dixons, Currys, and PC World. Pricing will sit at £399 for the 16 GB model, £479 for the 32 GB PlayBook, and £559 for 64 GB.
Storage aside, the PlayBook has an impressive dual-core 1 GHz processor, 7-inch 1024 x 600 display, HDMI-out, and great stereo speakers, making it an excellent video player. There’s also the video capture aspect; the 5 megapixel camera on the back and 3 megapixel camera on the front are both capable of shooting reasonably good 1080p video. Of course, it’s being branded as the first Bridge is in place for security, so your e-mail, contacts, calendar, and memos stay stored locally on your BlackBerry smartphone. While that means you can’t get access to native apps, some standalone versions will be made available shortly, and in the meantime, the browser is robust enough to handle webmail. App selection was initially a big problem, but now that developers have proper devices to test with, the selection and quality has been improving. Brits also have a chance to win a free BlackBerry PlayBook, if you find the price points a little steep. More info over here.
