It’s a huge day for Verizon Wireless users, as there are four new quality smartphones available. The Motorola Droid X 2, LG Revolution with 4G LTE, Sony Ericsson Xperia Play and the HTC Trophy with Windows Phone 7 are all available now. Let’s take a quick look at each.
LG Revolution
The LG Revolution is the third 4G LTE smartphone on Verizon Wireless and it rocks Android 2.2 with the customized Optimus UI. It sports a 1 GHz Snapdragon processor, 5-megapixel camera that can record in 720p HD, a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS and it has a large 4.3-inch capacitive screen.
I’m still working on the full review but it seems like a good device even if it is a little chunky. We’ll have to see how the battery life holds up. The LG Revolution will cost about $250 with a new, two-year contract.
Sony Ericsson Xperia Play
Are you ready to get your game on? Well, the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play is the world’s first PlayStation phone and it packs a slide-out gamepad to satisfy your gaming needs. It packs a 1 GHz Snapdragon processor, 4-inch display, Android 2.3 Gingerbread, 5-megapixel camera with a flash and all the goodies you’d expect like 3G, WiFi, GPS and Bluetooth.
Of course, the big draw of this is the game playing, so how did it fair in our Xperia Play review?
For now, casual gamers who find that they have a lot of time to kill, and don’t necessarily want to be productive in that time, the Play might actually be a good fit. The software still has a few bumps as far as stability goes, but the Xperia Arc shows that improvements on that front aren’t far off.
The Sony Ericsson Xperia Play will cost about $200 on a new, two-year contract. Check out the video below but note it’s from the international version, a full Verizon Play review is coming shortly.
HTC Trophy
The HTC Trophy is the first Windows Phone 7 handset to land on Big Red and the carrier now offers Microsoft’s platform alongside Android, iOS, BlackBerry OS (webOS too but not really). Windows Phone 7 is a different beast of an operating system because the user interface is much different from the icons-in-a-grid approach we’ve seen with iOS and Android.
The HTC Trophy has a 1 GHz Snapdragon processor, 3.8-inch WVGA display, 5 megapixel camera with LED flash and 720p video recording, 16 GB of on-board storage, and all the usual stuff like Wi-Fi b/g/n, GPS, and world-capable 3G. The HTC Trophy will cost about $150 on a new, two-year contract and buying it will get you a free Xbox 360 game if you get it by July 15.
Motorola Droid X2
The Motorola Droid X2 looks very similar to its predecessor but it has enough new features to tempt you. The 4.3-inch screen is now a qHD display and its a Gorilla Glass one too, so it should be quite scratch resistant. It also now rocks the dual-core Tegra 2 processor and this should mean it has enough horsepower to handle any app you can throw at it.
The Motorola Droid X2 also packs an 8-megapixel camera, an HDMI port, 3G, WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS but some may be turned off by the lack of a front-facing camera or 4G LTE. The Droid X2 can be had today for about $200 on a new, two-year contract.
