The now infamous Motorola Droid 3 has official broken cover and has been man-handled for the world to see. Well, it’s actually the Motorola Milestone 3, but you get the gist. The Droid 2 wasn’t much of an upgrade from the original, so what does its successor bring to the table?
The Droid 3 will pack a bigger punch then its predecessor, but some specifications that have been clarified that may not make it the powerhouse many wish it would be. Don’t get us wrong, the handset is still a power piece of kit but the Droid 3 may not be the phone for those who care about being on the cutting edge with their handsets.
First up, the Droid 3 will be sporting a 4 inch, qHD display instead of the 3.7 inch WVGA display seen on the previous two Motorola sliders. We’ll also find the TI OMAP 4430 dual-core processor in the guts of the device, making it a snappy bugger. Other confirmed specs include an 8 megapixel camera with 1080p HD video recording capabilities, VGA front-facing camera for video chat, 5-row keyboard (dedicated number row!), and a paltry 512MB of RAM. All sounds fine and dandy until you see how much RAM the Droid 3 is packing, and while it could be worse, newer handsets are shipping with 1GB of RAM. Shame on you, Moto.
Other turn-offs include Motorola’s custom Android skin, Motoblur, whether the manufacturer says it or not. The skin has been one of the most-hated custom user interfaces for the Android OS, but Motorola sure loves to push on its customers. The UI itself actually offers up some nice optimizations, but are ultimately eclipsed by the lack of aesthetic appeal throughout. The latest version of the UI no longer looks like it was built with twelve-year olds in mind, but it still doesn’t make us want to use it.
Throw in the lack of LTE and we officially have a pretty impressive, yet equally underwhelming device from Motorola.
What do you think of the Droid 3? Is the lack of RAM or LTE a deal breaker for you?
