The ever-raging battle between flora and undead is spreading from Android as the Plants vs. Zombies game by PopCap has shambled its way to Windows Phone. It comes complete with Xbox Live achievements and leaderboards, along with all of the classic game modes like adventure, Zen, and various mini-games. Two new modes, Vasebreaker and iZombie, are making their premiere in the Windows Phone app.
If you’re unfamiliar with the game, the goal is to keep waves of roughshod zombies from invading your home by planting a variety of defensive plantlife on your lawn. Some shoot small peas at invaders, others swallow zombies whole, but there are many types of wily zombies armed with bucket helmets, pole vaults, bungee cords and snorkeling gear to evade your efforts. You have to gather sun points in order to drop your plants, and even then, you need to pick your arsenal wisely depending on the time of day, the types of attacking zombies, and which part of your house they’re attacking. You can also gather coins to unlock new and improved plants against the unending hordes.
Plants vs. Zombies is a huge franchise, and could reach even greater heights if these rumours of a $1 billion acquisition of PopCap Games by EA pans out. EA is already well-established in the mobile world, but PopCap is the king of casual gaming, and with titles like Plants vs. Zombies offering some solid alternatives to big-name games like Angry Birds, it could be a great acquisition.
In any case, Plants vs. Zombies is available in the Windows Phone Marketplace right now for $4.99. If you’re looking for something more puzzly, PopCap also has Bejeweled for WP7 on sale.
