This isn’t officially confirmed, but the rumor on the street is that Sprint and Samsung are getting ready to finally bring the Android 2.3 Gingerbread to the Epic 4G. Yep that means the only device in the Galaxy S family with physical QWERTY keyboard will soon get a number of new features and performance enhancements.

From what we’ve heard the over-the-air update will start rolling after July 24th, which is like two weeks from now. Needless to say, the second your Epic 4G informs you there’s new software available, hop over to local Wi-Fi hotspot (to make the download faster), “push the button” and follow instructions on the screen. Make sure your battery is full, though. Also it’s useful to backup all the important data in case (God forbids) something goes wrong.

So in a nutshell, it took Samsung and Sprint a whole month to test out all the aspects of the new firmware update — if you recall, we spotted the leaked Gingerbread firmware on June 24th.

Maybe this is a dumb question or maybe I didn’t read the article thoroughly, but why is HTC being mentioned?

I am wondering about this too.

    The answer is simple – I’m a moron. A tired one. :)
Thanks for noticing, though – fixed it.

They’ll release it for a few hours and yank it. Just like 2.2 for all other galaxy s users
